[NFHx] served in Revolution; he and Carson Guffey were returning from collecting horses and mules for General Green’s Army when they rushed to cross the river unaware that Cornwallis Army had camped there beside the swollen river. Neely and Guffey were recognized and Guffey was shot from his house and killed. Francis loosed his horses jumped into the cane break and on down the river, where he remained until after dark when he discarded his clothes and swam the swollen river and onto his home of his anxious parents

? Son of Samuel Neely; b. 1731 (on gravestone); m. Mary Duncan (b.

1732, d. 1791), d. 1801 (on gravestone), will in Rowan Co in County Clerk’s office in old yellow book on highest shelf

Deed in Rowan Co dated 1778 to Richard Neely for 627 acres on the waters of Hunting Creek, now Davie Co. It was in Richard Neely’s home that General Green’s hungary, defeated, worn out men rushed after being pursued by Cornwallis men at Renchus Ford January 19, 1791. Richard Neely opened a barrel of sorgum and fed them, he filled a new wagon with bacon, meal, molasses, home spun and woven blankets, shirts, britches, spun and woven by his wife and daughter, Betsy. They were lost in the swollen Yadkin River for which his son Francis later received pay.
