Johannes Westbrook

Johannes Westbrook, son of Anthony Jansen Westbroek & Orrseltie Dircks, was born at Albany, New York, before 1668. He was one of the six white founders of Minisink Village. He was a member of the Kingston militia as early as 1686. He took the oath of allegiance in Ulster Co., N.Y., Sept 1, 1689. He served as trustee of Kingston in 1694. In 1709-10 and in 1718-19, he was taxed one schilling in Ulster County for one fyre (fire) place. He was a resident of Kingston in 1684, where, after the banns were published on May 12, he married Magdalena Decker, dau of Jan Broersen Decker & Heyltie Jacobs (see p. 71); she was bpt. Oct 3, 1666 at Kingston, N.Y.

The will of Johannes Westbrook of Knightsfield, dated Jan 25, 1725/6, and written in Dutch, was probated Apr 10, 1727, and is recorded in liber (book) 10 of wills, p. 422, Ulster Co., N.Y. An English translation: My dear wife, Magdalena, shall remain in possession of my whole estate during her natural life. To my youngest son, Dirck, when he marries, a good horse and a cow, similar to what my other children has received. To my eldest son Anthony three schillings, in advance, as his right of primogeniture. To my youngest son after his mother’s death, a good horse, and a good mare, and a grazing cow. To my six children by name Anthony, Johanes, Cornelius, Dirck, Sarah, wife of Cornelius Van Aken, and Antie, wife of Jacob Van Eten, my whole estate. Each one of my six children shall pay equally to the little son of my deceased daughter Ursulla, called Benjamin. Wife and sons Anthony and Johanes appointed executors. Witnesses: Jacob Rutsen, Jr., Nicholas Roosa, Jan Hardenbergh,

William Nottingham.

Lib. 10, p 314) Gives his wife Magdelene the usufruct of his estate during her

life. After her death it is to be divided equally among his six living children,

viz., Anthony, Johannes, Cornelius, Dirck, Sarah, wife if Cornelius Van Aken,

and Antie, wife od Jacob Van Eaton,and Benjamin, son of his desceased

daughter Ursala.
