John Joseph McFarland, the son of Walter Henry McFarland and Sarah Mitchell, was born in Scotland, and was a carpenter by trade. John married Clara A. Heller on June 28th, 1827. Clara died on April 24th, 1829, aged 21 years, 3 months and 27 days. On June 28th, 1831, John married Lydia Heller, Clara’s sister. Lydia passed away on January 8th, 1846, two days after her 35th birthday. John’s third marriage was to Desidera Metzger on May 18th, 1847, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was a milliner, and was reported to be an “old Maid” before marriage. Mary Frances McFarland was their only daughter. The family came “Around the Horn” to Oregon, settling in Salem. Mary Frances attended Willamette University, graduated and married Sylvester C. Simpson on October 11, 1866. Sylvester was teaching Latin and Greek for $900.00 per year.
